About Mrs. Debbie Cohen

I am a native New Yorker who has always hated the cold and moved south to attend college. I graduatedl from University of South Florida in Tampa where I majored in Education. While at USF, I made many treks up to Gainesville and became a huge Gator fan along the way. (UGa fans, beware! ) My teaching career began with Palm Beach County Schools, Florida teaching middle school special education. After 6 years in the classroom, I became an ESE Coordinator (which is the equivalent of an Instructional Support Teacher here). I did that for two years before I said good-bye to some awesome coworkers and friends, the beautiful beaches of Florida and moved to Atlanta. My first job in Fulton Co. was teaching at Barnwell Elementary. I liked it there a lot but realized I missed working with older kids, so I transferred to Northwestern Middle School. In 2004, I got married and also helped open Hopewell as a 6th grade Special Ed teacher. Two years later, my husband Howie and I became the proud (and exhausted) parents of twin girls. Fast forward almost 9 years and my daughters are now 3rd graders, Three years ago, I moved up to 7th grade and switched to general ed.  I am loving life as a 7th grade SS teacher. It's a great fit as I am a travel junkie and history nerd.  Believe it or not when I taught 6th grade, I managed to visit every continent we studied and almost all the countries we focused on most. (Russia is still on the list.)  I'm not sure I will make it to all of 7th grades' regions: Middle East, Africa or Asia for safety and financial reasons but who knows....After I retire from teaching, maybe I'll get hired as the next Travel Channel host.
